Microbial fungus contamination prompts Chemist Warehouse drink recall

The urgent recall of a flavored energy beverage sold in Australia over fears that it may have been contaminated by a microbial fungal is due to concerns about its potential contamination.

The recall applies to Performance Inspired’s Protein Water Ready2Go Blueberry Lemonade Flavor and Energy Water Go Time Fruit Punch Pow Flavor, both of which come in 500ml bottle sizes.

Energy Waters includes those with a Best Before date of up to December 26. Protein Waters are affected up to December 28.

The recall notice issued by Food Standards Australia New Zealand on Wednesday stated that the contamination was due to microbial (Aureobasidium melanogenic).

Food products contaminated with Aureobasidium can cause illness when consumed.

Chemist Warehouses across the country sell these drinks.

If you have a product that is affected, do not consume it. Instead, please return it to the place where it was bought for a refund.

Aureobasidium melanogenum is an elongated, darkly colored fungus that is commonly found in freshwater.

If you are concerned about your health after drinking one of these potentially contaminated beverages, we recommend that you seek medical advice.
