Bizarre Beers You Never Knew Existed

Beer is an ancient beverage. According to World History, humans have been brewing beer (or any beverage very similar to our modern understanding) for around 10,000 years.

When you think about beer today, the first thing that comes to mind is a fizzy, golden lager made with water, barley hops, yeast, rice, or corn. Beer culture enthusiasts may enjoy a wider range of beers and prefer to drink IPAs, stouts or wheat over milder flavored beers.

No matter your beer preferences, you have never heard of these unusual, rare, and outlandish beers. That is, unless, of course, you are an adventurous and curious beer sammler. Continue reading to discover the 12 most unusual beers ever made in beer’s long and rich history. Next, check out The #1 Best Drinkable Juice Every Day, According to Science.

Dogfish Head Birra Etrusca Bronze

This rare and intense beer, true to its ancient origins, is brewed using inspiration from 2,800-year-old Etruscan burials. It also contains ingredients that were available to ancient brewers. These include an heirloom wheat variety, honey, pomegranates and Ethiopian myrrh resin.

Oyster Stout

Oyster stout is made with oysters and can be found in many countries. These rich and creamy beers can have only the shells added to their wort (the “green” pre-fermented beer) or contain the whole mollusk.

Lindemans Lambic

The Lambic beers you have tried are unlike anything else. This is because they are only available in one area of the world, Pajottenland. Many yeast strains are in the air, which can lead to spontaneous fermentation. This happens when the brewery’s windows remain open to let in yeast-laden breezes. The lambic beer has a complex and tangy flavor reminiscent of wine. However, other beers made with fruit are wonderfully tart and sweet.

Brewmaster Snake Venom Fortified Beer

This is a strong beer-slash hard liquor hybrid. It is also very stiff: it contains 67.5% alcohol per volume. This makes it much more ABV than many whiskies and vodkas. The first ingredient is pure alcohol, while the second is beer made from water, barley hops, yeast, and hops.

Twisted Pine Ghost Face Killa

Despite its mild 5.2% ABV (international bitterness units) and 15 IBUs (international sweetness units), this beer is not too alarming. But it’s the spicy flavor that will make you shiver. This beer is made with six types of chile pepper, including ghost pepper. It is spicy enough that it can be felt as painful by most people who drink it.

Wynkoop Brewing Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout

Are you familiar with Rocky Mountain oysters? They are cooked bull testicles. They are added to the beer. Although it is also made with barley, specialty malts and hops, and yeast, the unique, smoky, savory taste comes from the roasted bull testicles.

Smartmouth Brewing Saturday Morning IIPA

Did you ever wish there was a beer that had the same taste as sweet cereal when you sat down in front of the television on Saturday mornings? You probably weren’t a child then, so it is unlikely that you would. This “nostalgically delicious” beer is available if you want it now. It’s made with numerous pounds of marshmallows in each batch.

Moody Tongue Shaved Pilsner of Black Truffle Pilsner

This $ 120-per-bottle beer is a great choice if you have a sophisticated palate and are wealthy. It’s made with truffles… Western Australian Black Perigord Truffles, to be exact.

Flanders Red Ale

This beer is unique. It’s a wild style of beer that you will enjoy the first time you have a taste. Flanders Red Ales, also known as Flemish Red Ale (per American Craft Beer), is a strong and bitter beer. It’s more like wine.

Stedji Brewery Hrutur

This Icelandic beer has a modest ABV and a rating of 5.1%. However, it is big on strange ingredients. It contains water, grains, hops and yeast. It was made using ram testicles, which were smoked over fires that were made from sheep dung.

Stedji Brewery Whale Beer

Stedji’s brewers had to be better than their Whale Beer. This beer does not contain ram tests smoked over sheep dung; instead, it contains water, barley and hops, and yeast. Each batch also has a whale-dung-smoked whale testicle to aid in the brewing process.

Samuel Adams Utopias

This beer is unlike Snake Venom, which is liquor mixed with beer. It is brewed and aged, and all the flavor and ABV are obtained from the ingredients, care, and time spent. The Boston Beer Company releases Utopias every year. It is 28% ABV and still feels like a spirit.
